Who is this guy?

I’m a fifty something guy with a full time job and a passion to explore. That includes cities, live music, countries, bookstores, gravel roads, coffee shops, pubs, and dark alleys.  I travel light and often, mostly over long weekends and sometimes for a couple weeks.  This website chronicles these travels and the details about how I do it.  I love sharing my journeys and would be honored if it inspires others to see more of this amazing world.  Whether I’m discovering a coffeehouse in Green Bay, catching a concert at the Wolf Trap outside of DC, or wandering the grounds of Auschwitz, you can find out about it here.

I am just a guy who loves to travel, pretty much everywhere. As a result, I have taught myself how to travel often and independently. What this really means is that I book my own flights and find my own way. I own a dozen pieces of luggage and they all fit in the overhead bin. I know the codes of airports all over the world. I’d rather spend an hour trying to figure out how to use the metro in Amsterdam than sign up for a city tour. My bus from Guatemala City to San Salvador was delayed two hours at the border when the customs guys ordered everybody off and searched all the luggage for drugs. I walked 10 miles in Belfast one day, not because I planned it like that, but it’s just how the day unfolded. And the fact that it was drizzling was just a bonus. Somehow, we all find our own way, and I want to encourage you to find yours.

My name is Greg Winkler. I live in southern Wisconsin where I make a living managing a county human services agency. I love to run, play guitar, garden, cook easy stuff, see live music, and lots more. That’s me over there on the left, at Spruce Street Harbor Park in Philadelphia. There’s like a hundred hammocks hanging in the shade next to the Delaware River.
